Digital Maven, Day and Night: Emily Polner
Who said spending a lot of time on the internet was a bad thing? Emily Polner is a creative strategist at Rebecca Minkoff on weekdays, and a blogger 24/7. We met up with her to talk about working in fashion, running an online lifestyle destination, and networking her way to the top.
AD: What's your name, age, and where do you live?
EP: I’m Emily and I’m 23 years old. I live in Queens on the border of Astoria and Long Island City.
AD: If you had to sum up your career goals briefly, what would you say?
EP: I would love to have my own brand one day, or blog full time!
AD: How did you get into the fashion world?
EP: I used LinkedIn to my advantage! It was that and being in the right place at the right time, as cliché as that sounds. I basically slid into LinkedIn DMs and here I am managing a brand with an audience of over 2 million followers.
AD: What advice would you give to your 18 year old self?
EP: To reach out and network like crazy! It’s amazing what a short and sweet email/message can accomplish. The worst thing you can be told is “no.”
AD: What does a day in the life at your job look like?
EP: A lot of scheduling posts across different social media platforms and meetings with different teams. I work in tandem with the E-Commerce and PR teams to make sure we’re all aligned on the brand initiatives.
AD: What was the most formative job experience, good or bad, that you’ve ever had?
EP: When I ran the social media accounts for my college’s admissions office. I worked there for two years when I was in school and there were a lot of ups-and-downs. The best part of that role was all of the creative freedom I had.
AD: Tell us a little bit about your blog and the work you do outside of your 9-5!
EP: When I’m out of the office, I’m almost always working on my blog, No Repeats or Hesitations. I started my blog over four years ago and right now is the most active it’s ever been. What started as my quiet, humble corner of the internet is currently evolving into a full-blown lifestyle destination for young women who are just starting their careers. NRoH is a full-time job in itself- I can be found doing anything from shooting looks, to managing my Instagram, to planning my content calendar in my “free” time.
AD: How would you describe your style in one word?
AD: What do you love about vintage?
EP: I love the experience of finding a piece that basically no one else has.
AD: Do you have a favorite vintage find?
EP: I have so many, but my favorite would have to be my sherpa-lined Levi’s denim jacket.
AD: What's the worst trend you've ever participated in?
EP: In middle school, I used to stack every single bracelet I owned on one arm and just wear them around, no matter what outfit I was wearing. So bad!! I wish I knew why I thought that was cool.
